How Do You Make an Impressive Cover Letter


Have you seen an interesting job opening and do you want to apply ? Then writing a cover letter is the first step. Something that can be quite difficult. Specially if you have never written a cover letter or are never invited for an interview. How do you write an impressive cover letter? A letter that impresses the reader and invites you for a job interview? How do you ensure that your letter stands out among the other letters? Well, by applying these 10 tips.

A cover letter has the purpose that the reader will also read your resume. Based on your resume, an employer will eventually invite you for a job interview. If your cover letter doesn't stand out and isn't convincing enough, there is little chance that your curriculum vitae will be read.

10 Cover letter tips for making the employer impressed:

1. First read the vacancy text carefully

Read the vacancy text carefully before you start writing. Then write down the three most important requirements and characteristics. Include these three in your cover letter. Include the other requirements and characteristics in your resume. For example, is an employer looking for someone with organizational talent and do you have that? Then tell your experience with this in your letter, for example organizing an event, reception or wedding party. Use the same terms in the letter as in the vacancy text. This shows that you understand the employer.

2. Make sure your letter doesn't look like your resume

Make sure that your cover letter doesn't repeat your resume. You can of course mention something from your resume that's important for the job. Describe in the letter specially the reason why you're suitable for the job. Explain why you have completed a certain course, why you started working at a company and what experience you have gained. Focus your story more and more on the employer and state why you would like to work there. This makes it a fascinating letter where the reader doesn't drop out.

3. Use short sentences

Try to use short sentences as much as possible. Many people find it difficult to read long sentences. It's best to write a longer sentence, but then alternate this with a number of short sentences. Also make sure that you don't use difficult sentence constructions in your letter, so that the reader doesn't drop out and the letter keeps reading.

4. Only include experience that's relevant to the position in your letter

Only state the experience that's important for the position in your letter. Suppose you apply for the position of budget coach. Then experience as a sales employee or service employee is of course not important for this job. Experience as a social worker or life coach is relevant.

5. Make it clear why you're the right person for the job

Make it clear in the cover letter why you're the right person for the position. You do this by demonstrating that you meet the requirements. So make use of the three characteristics that you have extracted from the vacancy text (see tip 1). Optionally, give a practical example.

6. State why you're so enthusiastic about the vacancy

State clearly in the letter why you're so enthusiastic about the vacancy. Give good arguments here. Are you applying for a job as a teacher? For example, tell them that you're doing volunteer work at a children's farm. Do you respond to a vacancy in healthcare? Then you can tell in your letter that you do volunteer work at a nursing home every week. In addition, show your interest and interest in the company where you're applying.

7. Write a customized cover letter

If necessary, ask someone else to check your letter again.

10. Follow the instructions from the vacancy text

The vacancy text states which channel you can apply for. This is for example through e-mail, by post or through an application form. Follow these instructions. This also shows that you have read the vacancy text well.
