Why Do You Want This Job Interview Question


It's a fact that during a job search process you must answer this question at least once. And the way you do it can make the difference between whether or not the company decides to offer you the job.

“Why do you want this job?” Is often one of the most common questions in an interview, just like “tell me about yourself,” “what is your main weakness?” And “where do you see yourself in five years? ? For some people, these types of queries make them very nervous, but the good news is that answering them can be as simple as carefully explaining the reason why you applied for employment.

Anticipate the question

- It's probably one of the first questions in the interview: "Why do you want this job?" Possibly they will do it before: "Tell us a little about yourself" and "what do you know about the company?".

Why the interviewer asks this question?

Finding out the reasons why you want the job, along with all the other questions you will be asked in an interview, will give the interviewer the information you need to make a decision.

Prepare your answer

Here are some considerations and questions for you to ask yourself and so you can make sure you give the best answer:

Knowledge about the company and the position: define exactly in which aspects of the position your skills would fit perfectly and how you would benefit. Also, know what the company can offer you:

- What stage of growth is the company in?
- Has the company recently changed its offer of products or services? If so, how could you add value to this process?
- Is there any regulation in the industry or is it expected that there will be changes in the sector?

Validation of experience and examples of success: one of the clearest indicators to achieve the position is to expose your previous successes and demonstrate that you can repeat them again:

- Have you recently achieved or even exceeded any of the objectives you had in your current or previous job? How could you apply that knowledge or learning to the company to which you are applying?
- What specialized or industry knowledge you applied successfully before could you transfer to your new job?
- What challenges did you overcome and how?

What it brings to you: your goal is to demonstrate that you can bring many skills and knowledge to the position that will help drive and improve the company. You are ambitious and see that this new position will make you grow, put you to the test and help you continue to improve and complete your knowledge.

- What are your career goals and how will this work help you along the way to achieve them?
- What professional development or learning opportunities are you looking for?

Passion: that the candidate fits the corporate culture is, increasingly, an aspect to be considered by those responsible for recruitment. They want to be sure that the new employee is the right one and that it matches the way the team works and the spirit of the organization.

- What aspects of this work excite you and motivate you to get up every morning and come to the office?
- During your job search, what elements of the offer prompted you to submit your resume?

What should i say?

Consider these recommendations as examples of answers or as basic elements. In each case, speak naturally and serenely, explaining why the work could provide you as a professional and how you could be an added value for the position and for the company.

- "I see it as a way to progress in my professional career in an exciting / innovative / challenging company / sector ...".
- "I feel that my skills could fit very well in this job because…"
- "I feel I have the knowledge (or other particular ability) to succeed in this position because ..."
- "I'm very excited about this opportunity because I can ..."

Examples of what I should not say

Below, you will find some typical mistakes that are made during interviews and that could ruin your chances of moving on to the second stage in the selection process.

- "I need a job": to be anxious and / or needed to get the job, without demonstrating that your profile may involve some added value for the company, reflects a lack of interest.
- “I have heard that it pays well”: although remuneration is a key consideration, talking about salary from an early age in the interview, and even more when it's emphasized that money is the only motivation for you, it reflects a certain selfishness and avarice.
- "I see it as a springboard for a better position": no manager expects your employees to remain in the company forever, but if you already have one foot out before even entering, that can be a negative point.
